How to (ethically) steal your competitions best ideas

Modelling from the best isn’t anything new, any coach will tell you not to reinvent the wheel every time.

Find what works best and make your own version of it, simple. To that end, the TOPIC RESEARCH tool in SEM rush is a great way to save time researching what is working for your competitors.

This video outlines how you can use it to identify content ideas & link to high-value content yourself which will help you built outbound links that matter.

Big news from Google about REL=”NoFollow”

If you’ve done any link building or SEO, you’ll know that one of the big things to watch for are sites with “nofollow” tags.

This was a hard stop in the past, meaning sites that put the ‘nofollow’ attribute around your link, were passing no ‘link juice’ and as such those links were use less to boosting your SEO score.

It would seem times they are a changin’

In a post, Google said the were ‘evolving’ the ‘nofollow’ tag and were now going to consider it as a ‘hint’ (whatever that means) and not a hard stop directive.

They’re also adding two new tags, ‘sponsored’ and ‘ugc’ to the mix which further murkies the water. Google’s post says that they don’t expect dramatic ranking changes for existing sites, but that remains to be seen.

My assumption would be that a ‘sponsored’ post would carry less influence than a ‘ugc’ post which is arguably more genuine, but in typical fashion, there was no details as to how those tags would influence the search results.

How to do keyword research & some useful SEO tools

keyword research

This is the most important step, it’s what set’s up your ground game if you will.

Would you go on vacation without a map? You wouldn’t go on a road trip with no direction right?

Keyword research is the same thing, unless you know what people are searching for, you’re writing content in the dark and hoping it’ll reach it’s audience.

Please, whatever you do don’t trust Google Keyword Research tool for this either. Besides not giving you sources & volume, they suggest things that are relevant for their PAID ad program. Which of course they want to sell you more of, so they are NOT going to give you the data you need.

I have yet to find anything better that SEM RUSH for doing proper keyword research.

Here’s a video that I made that shows how I do keyword research using SEMRUSH

App store links count high

Links from the app store

Apps are not the simplest thing to publish, we recognize that.

But it’s easier than you might think to get an app into the app store.

When you do, your publisher’s profile is one of the places that you can put a link back to your website. Because the app stores are very highly ranked pages, links back from them carry real weight.

You can get either one, but get both if you can.

If you want to know how to get simple apps done super cheap, leave us a message in the comments and we’ll send you our report.

Press Releases help you boost your rankings for SEO

Press Releases for SEO

Use a variety of press release services to get links out there.

The larger ones can get expensive, but there are several smaller press release networks that can get you good distribution and lots of links on higher PR media sites.

Leave us a comment below if you’d like me to send you a list of good PR sites.

The key with Press Releases is to ensure that in your BIO there is a link back to your site. Sometimes you can also have a link in the press release, but usually it’ll strip it out, depends on the service.

The point is, it will get aggregated to a lot of different sites and you should get more than just a few links out of it over time.

Great content is SEO

Great content is SEO

Make great content that people want to share, it’s that simple.

Videos, Infographics, well-written articles.

Do your keyword research, write content that responds to what people are searching for. I’m not saying to completely abandon any processes. But in the end, make it good content and the rest will follow.

Link back from YouTube

YouTube SEO tip

YouTube is owned by Google and as such, they tend to feature videos in their search results and count content you post there towards your overall authority score.

Use the description to make a link back to your site, it’s simple but people often overlook it. From an SEO perspective, it doesn’t matter where that link is in the description, but I like to put it upfront so that it shows up in the summary view of the text.

if people can click the link without needing to ‘show more’ on the text, my gut instinct is that it will tend to get more clicks than if it’s buried at the bottom of your description.

Don’t forget to title the video using your keywords and use plenty of tag variations on your keywords (you can use 550 letters in total, that’s a lot of tags).

Get your FAQ’s straight

Answer the question

First off, it’s the basis of all sales, answering questions.

Stop talking, listen and answer their question.

That’s really the essence of communication right? It’s also the core of what search results should be, an answer.

If you know where to look for those questions, you’ll know how to answer them.

Here are a few things to remember (which we cover in more detail in my SEO COURSE) when you’re answering those questions.

  1. Format it per Google’s Rich Card Format.
  2. Post both the question and the answer.
  3. Make additional content (I like video) about the answer.
